Signs Your Child May Benefit from ABA

Every child develops differently. But certain patterns — in communication, behaviour, and social engagement — can indicate that structured, evidence-based support would help your child thrive. Here are 10 signs to look for.

1

Delayed Speech or Language Development

Your child is not meeting typical communication milestones — such as saying first words by 12–18 months, or combining words by 24 months. ABA addresses language as a learnable skill and uses systematic programming to build communication.

2

Difficulty with Social Interaction

Your child rarely makes eye contact, does not respond to their name, has difficulty playing with other children, or appears uninterested in social connection. ABA social skills programs address these areas through structured teaching and natural play.

3

Repetitive or Restricted Behaviours

Your child engages in repetitive movements (hand-flapping, rocking) or insists on rigid routines. ABA helps children build flexibility, manage sensory needs, and develop a wider range of behaviours.

4

Difficulty with Transitions

Your child becomes significantly distressed when routines change or activities end. ABA uses structured preparation strategies and gradual exposure to help children manage transitions more effectively.

5

Frequent Meltdowns or Challenging Behaviour

If your child has intense or frequent outbursts, aggression, or self-injurious behaviour, a RBA performs a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify the cause and create a supportive behaviour plan.

6

Difficulty with Daily Living Skills

Your child struggles with tasks like dressing, toothbrushing, using utensils, or toilet training. ABA breaks these skills into small, manageable steps and teaches them systematically.

7

Challenges Following Instructions

Your child has difficulty understanding and following multi-step directions, which can affect learning at home and school. ABA builds instruction-following as a foundational skill.

8

Difficulty in a School or Group Setting

Your child struggles to stay on task, interact with peers, or follow classroom routines. ABA school readiness programs specifically prepare children for the Ontario school environment.

9

Limited Play Skills

Your child plays in very restricted ways, has difficulty with imaginative play, or does not know how to engage with toys appropriately. ABA expands play repertoires through structured teaching and child-led naturalistic sessions.

10

An ASD Diagnosis (Any Age)

A confirmed diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is the clearest indicator. Early intervention (ages 2–6) is most effective, but ABA benefits children and adolescents at all ages and stages.

What to Do Next

If your child shows several of these signs, the next step is to speak with a professional. Start by discussing your concerns with your family doctor or paediatrician, who can refer you for a diagnostic assessment if appropriate.

Once you have a diagnosis, KidsTruCare's clinical team can conduct a comprehensive assessment and discuss whether ABA therapy is the right fit for your child.
