What Is ABA Therapy?

If you are exploring support options for your child, you have likely heard the term ABA. This guide explains what ABA is, how it works, and what families in Ontario can expect.

What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach to understanding and improving behavior. It is supported by decades of research and recommended by major health organizations.

ABA looks at what happens before and after behavior. Clinicians use that information to teach new skills and reduce barriers to learning.

What Can ABA Therapy Help With?

ABA is often used for children with autism, but the methods also help other children who need structured skill-building. Common focus areas include:

  • Communication and language development (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Social skills and peer interaction
  • Daily living and self-care routines
  • School readiness and academic skills
  • Behaviour reduction (e.g., meltdowns, aggression, self-injury)
  • Play skills and flexibility
  • Independence and community participation

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA uses positive reinforcement to strengthen helpful behaviors. Therapy is individualized. A RBA starts with an assessment, then builds a plan around your child's strengths and needs.

Sessions are delivered by a Registered Behaviour Technician under RBA supervision. Data is collected every session. Parents are coached so they can support progress in daily routines.

What Does an ABA Session Look Like?

Sessions vary by age, goals, and setting. For younger children, sessions are often play-based. For older children, sessions may include more structured tasks and community practice.

A typical in-home ABA session in Ontario might look like:

  • Warm-up activity to set a positive, motivating tone
  • Structured skill teaching (e.g., asking for items, identifying letters)
  • Play-based generalization of new skills
  • Data collection on each learning target
  • Brief parent debrief and coaching

Is ABA Therapy Right for My Child?

ABA is often most effective when started early, but children of all ages can benefit. A RBA assesses cognitive, communication, social, and behavior needs before recommending intensity.

In Ontario, ABA therapy can be funded through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP), making it accessible to many families regardless of financial circumstances.

ABA in Ontario: What Families Should Know

In Ontario, ABA providers are governed by CPBAO. RBAs practicing in the province must be registered. When comparing providers, confirm that the clinical team is properly registered.

At KidsTruCare, all clinical supervisors hold active RBA certification and Ontario RBA registration. We provide services across Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge, and Whitby.
