Early Signs of Autism in Toddlers

Social & Communication Signs (12–18 months)
- Not pointing to objects or events to share interest
- Limited or no babbling by 12 months
- Not responding consistently to their own name
- Limited eye contact during interactions
- Not using gestures (waving, reaching) by 12 months
Language & Behaviour Signs (18–36 months)
- No single words by 16 months or no two-word phrases by 24 months
- Loss of previously acquired speech or social skills
- Repetitive movements such as hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning
- Intense focus on specific objects or restricted interests
- Significant distress with changes to routine
- Unusual reactions to sensory input (sounds, textures, lights)
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
- Speak with your child's paediatrician and request a developmental screening
- Ask for a referral to a developmental paediatrician or registered psychologist for a formal ASD assessment
- Register with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) immediately after diagnosis — waitlists are long
- Consider early intervention ABA therapy, which has the strongest evidence base for toddlers with ASD
