ABA vs Speech Therapy
Many Ontario families hear about both ABA and speech therapy. The difference can feel confusing at first. This guide explains each approach and shows how they can work together.
How ABA Therapy Works
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach that teaches skills using behavior science. It can target communication, social interaction, daily living skills, school readiness, and behavior support.
ABA is delivered by a RBA and Registered Behaviour Technicians. Sessions are individualized and data-driven. Communication is a major area, but ABA is broader than language only.
How Speech Therapy Works
Speech therapy focuses on communication. This includes speech sounds, understanding language, expressing language, fluency, voice, and swallowing. Speech-language pathologists are regulated health professionals with specialized training.
SLPs assess and treat articulation, language delays, AAC needs, and social communication. Their work is focused mainly on communication and swallowing.

Can ABA and Speech Therapy Work Together?
Yes. For many children, they work best together. Speech therapy focuses on language mechanics. ABA focuses on functional use of communication across routines and settings.
At KidsTruCare, RBAs coordinate with speech-language pathologists when both services are active. We align goals, share progress data, and use consistent strategies.
Which Should My Child Start With?
If your child has a recent ASD diagnosis, ABA is often the main starting point because it addresses many developmental areas at once. Communication goals are included.
If your child has articulation issues, major AAC needs, or swallowing concerns, an SLP assessment should happen early, often in parallel with ABA.
When in doubt, speak with your RBA or paediatrician. KidsTruCare's clinical team can advise on the right combination of supports for your child's profile.
